Sandhill Crane Trending Down 23% in Gainesville, Florida

It is said that Sandhill Cranes were once so abundant they darkened the Florida sky during migration. Over the course of the 20th century Sandhill Crane populations decreased by 36% due to hunting and decreased habitat. Protection from hunting in 1974 and ongoing conservation efforts and adaptation to suburban environments slowed the birds decline. The 23% decline in this drawing represents 2012-2022 e-bird data showing bird trends.
