When I was young, I marveled at the Goldfinches my father would attract to our back porch. In the dead of winter, his thistle feeders were packed with black and yellow birds. Inspired by this, I’ve included thistle in every backyard where I have lived. But Goldfinches never arrive in such a cloud of color as I witnessed back in the 1970’s. I always thought it was because I didn’t live in “Goldfinch country.” But when talking to my brother about this shared memory he stated the same – that he too has never had an abundance like at our father’s feeders.
